Rounding out a full range of gear manufacturing capabilities, Arrow is equipped for the manufacture of helical gears.

Helical gears are another type of parallel axis gear. Unlike spur gears, which feature teeth that are at a 90 degree orientation to the axis of the gear, helical gears have teeth that are cut at an angle to the face of the gear and appear twisted in a helix or helical form.

During the engagement of the helical gear teeth, contact begins at one end of the tooth, and then spreads gradually throughout rotation, until full mesh is achieved. The teeth of the helical gears then gradually exit mesh in the same manner.

As compared to spur gears, the benefit of helical gears is that this gradual engagement results in smoother and quieter gear operation, higher load carrying capacity, and the reduction of wear.

Helical gear teeth can be cut on either the outside or the inside of a cylinder, referred to as external and internal helical gears respectively. While Arrow has the capability of manufacturing internal helical gears, the majority of Arrow’s helical work is on externals.

Similar to spur gears, external helical gear teeth are cut with a hob. For gears used in higher precision applications, the teeth can be ground in one of Arrow’s helical tooth grinders, such as the Hofler Helix 400 or the Hofler Rapid 800 for larger parts.
