Great Way to Verify Ideal Contact Pattern and Tooth Thickness

Master gears are used as a reference standard during the manufacturing process to verify ideal contact pattern and tooth thickness of bevel gears. Arrow has produced hundreds of master gear sets for customers as well as for internal production processes.

When a bevel gear set is designed and developed, the geometry of the gear teeth are directly related to the contact pattern and subsequent performance of the gears. To ensure repeatability of this quality, production parts are run against master gears at key points in the manufacturing process.

With the integration of Arrow’s advanced systems for the verification of gear tooth topography, Arrow has the ability to work with digitized gear masters and offers this to customers as an efficient alternative to existing techniques.

The capability of producing master gears highlights Arrow’s extensive experience with the production of bevel gears.

Master gears are typically produced in a set of three; gold, silver and bronze (working master).  The gold master is typically kept by the customer and is used only to calibrate the silver master.  The silver master is kept by the gear supplier and is used to calibrate the working master.  The working master is run against production parts to validate tooth contact and to ensure consistency from one production lot to the next.
